This book is right up there with Waite's "New C Primer Plus", 2nd edition, for learning C as a self-study source. This Schaum's outline is especially clear and doesn't try to cram too much information in one chapter.I particularly like this treatment because of the many opportunities for programming (in order to learn how to program you have to write code on your own). This book provides such exercises that have a strong math emphasis, an area in which I'm interested. The only reason I didn't give it the full 5-stars is that it doesn't conform fully to the ANSI standards, in particular as it relates to functions and storage classes and how they're treated. Waite's book, which was actually written before this one, does point out such differences. There are a couple of other ANSI standard differences not addressed in Gottfried's book as well, but those shortcomings are miniscule compared to the clear explanations, along with the wealth of problems and programming opportunities I mentioned above. I've seen a lot of C textbooks, and this one is tied for #1 in my view.
I had read this book in 1999 to brush up my C programming skills. Today in 2013 when I had to look back at the concepts I ordered the same book and followed through. If you are serious about programming please solve each and every exercise/task at the end of each chapter. Don't buy this book if you want to learn programming in 24 hours! Sorry :)
As a beginning student of C, I thought this book looked great. My son, who makes a darned good living as a programmer, didn't think it was all that great for a beginner to use.
Not the best text book, but had no choice for my class.

The Schaums outline of programming C is very helpful when used in conjunction with a good textbook. It has allot of worked out answers and keys in on the most important concepts of learning the C programming language.
